You're describing the point where cognition touches the boundary between the individual and the relational field — where the value of a rare capacity depends on the system’s ability to integrate it. It seems that the absence of integrative capacity is the problem. Without that structure, the ability reads as threat, noise, or status disruption. The ability is in the regime, not the individual.

Think of it as two axes. One is the individual’s cognitive distance (how far their perception or pattern‑capacity sits from the norm). The other axis is the system’s integrative bandwidth (how much deviation the group can absorb without treating it as threat). When cognitive distance rises faster than integrative bandwidth, the point moves into the “noise/threat” quadrant. When bandwidth is high, the same point sits in the “signal/resource” quadrant. The ability doesn’t change, but its coordinates do.

This is a nice spatial intuition, but I'd be cautious: it risks treating cognitive distance as a fixed property of the individual, when ACT defines it relationally - involving the individual, the problem, and the group's shared representations. The same ability can generate distance in one context and not in another.

Also, 'integrative bandwidth' needs operationalization.

What's the unit? How is it measured?

Does it change with the problem?

Without that, the two-axis model is just a redescription of the problem it claims to solve..

BTW, I can't just swap things out. I'm limited by my own methodological framework. I can't create something new without validation and calibration. Otherwise, I'll be generating hypotheses as facts.

A hypothesis is either true or false. If it's incorrect, a new one is created or modified. This is quite well documented in the Meta-Evolution 1.97 manuscript – in the appendices.

It's readily available, so everyone has access to the analytical tools.

You’re right that cognitive distance isn’t a fixed trait — it’s relational, and the coordinates shift with the problem, the group, and the shared representational frame. What I’m pointing to is the underlying mechanism: every system has a way of maintaining coherence, and humans do it through relevance‑weighting first and story second. The nervous system builds a world from significance, and narrative is the way we keep that world stable enough to act inside.
